Frequently Asked Questions

  • Lessons are starting, but my student hasn't received an instrument/we haven't rented one yet. Can my student still participate/join?

During the next few weeks, I will take anyone who has an instrument, or thinks they will be participating, down to the band room.  This will give them the opportunity to see the band room and participate in the beginning of the year activities. In subsequent weeks, students can still participate without an instrument as we review fundamentals.

There is no deadline to join the band.  I want to encourage as many students as possible to experience making music.

Is there a Google Classroom Page?

Yes, each grade has its own Google Classroom. The code for the 6th grade classroom is yiyzesy and the code for the 5th grade classroom is zeziuvi.

What do I need for my lesson day?

On days that students have lessons, they should bring their instrument and lesson book.  Keyboardists will be given a folder and should bring that each week.  Percussionists do not need to bring in their instruments. However, they must bring their sticks and mallets.

What do I do with my instrument when I get to school?

You can either keep your instrument in your classroom until it's time for your lesson, or you can take it down to the band room and leave it by the paper towel dispensers.

Do I have to complete a weekly practice log?

No, there is no mandatory practice.  Do I want students to practice? Absolutely.  But I want them to practice because they want to, not because they have to.

    What instruments can I play?

Woodwinds: Flute, Calrinet, Oboe, Alto Saxophone

Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone

    Percussion: Snare Drum/Bells, Keyboard

    When are my lessons?

Lessons will take place during specials.  Additionally, the new Horblet schedule allows us to have band class during OSS. Once I finalize the schedule, I will post it here and in the Classrooms.

I forgot my instrument, can I still come to lessons?

Absolutely.  While you won't be able to make a sound without an instrument, you can still participate and learn in other ways.

    Is there a concert?

Yes, there are actually two.  One is a Horbelt School concert, and the second is a district-wide performance.  More information will be forthcoming.

Can I participate in band if I am also in  G&T, Chorus, Basic Skills, Speech, and/or ESL?

Absolutely!  Your teachers and I will work out a schedule to allow you to do both.
