• The following information is about what a student day will look like.

The conceptualization of the 5-6 building is that of an elementary school with a middle school flavor – the INTERMEDIATE BUILDING.

The goal was to push the “feel” of the building towards the more mature while striving to maintain some of those things of childhood we associate with the innocence of youth.  To put that into practical terms, it looks like this:   content classes will be delineated but there will be no bells.   Content classes in the 5th grade are semi-departmentalized and 6th grade students are in departmentalized classes – that is, each subject area is taught by the content teacher.   5th grade teachers will teach two subject areas – paired naturally like Math/Science and ELA/Social Studies.  6th grade students will have different teachers for each subject area, but will travel in cohorts to each class.  All students will have recess every day.     One of the challenges was to come up with a schedule that would accommodate this and still give flexibility to provide the distinctives between the 5th and 6th grades.

Here is what the general schedule looks like on a normal day:

Students will have a (8) eight period day plus lunch.   The subject areas are ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, and a variety of specials – which I will expand on next.

In both grades, Math and ELA will be double blocked so students have close to 80 minutes of instruction in those areas daily.

All grades will have OSS which stands for Other Student Services and will allow students to receive extra help; be pulled for band; attend chorus, and ESL, Basic Skills classes; or work on a project of their own during this time.
