    World Languages Education in the 21st Century (taken from NJ DOE)

    New Jersey citizens are part of a dynamic, interconnected, and technologically driven global society centered on the creation and communication of knowledge and ideas across geographical, cultural, and linguistic borders.
    Individuals who effectively communicate in more than one language, with an appropriate understanding of cultural contexts, are globally literate and possess the attributes reflected in the mission and vision for world languages education that follow:
    Mission: The study of another language and culture enables individuals, whether functioning as citizens or workers, to communicate face-to-face and by virtual means in appropriate ways with people from diverse cultures.
    Vision: An education in world languages fosters a population that:

    • Communicates in more than one language with the levels of language proficiency that are required to function in a variety of occupations and careers in the contemporary workplace.
    • Exhibits attitudes, values, and skills that indicate a positive disposition and understanding of cultural differences and that enhance cross-cultural communication.
    • Values language learning as a global literacy as well as for its long-term worth in fostering personal, work-related, and/or financial success in our increasingly interconnected world.

    Grades K-6
    At the K-6 school level, the district offers an introductory Spanish experience to all students. The goal of the program is to provide students with an educational base for future world language studies.

    Grades 7-8

    At the middle school level, the district offers accelerated courses such as Accelerated Grade 7 and Spanish I for students who qualify for accelerated placement. If a student meets the multiple measure criteria, students can be placed in our Spanish II course at the high school.

    Grades 9-12

    At the high school level, we currently offer Spanish & French.

    One year of a world language course is required for graduation (5 credits).

    The Seal of Biliteracy, introduced in January 2016, provides recognition to high school seniors who are able to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. This Seal will include a certificate prepared by the NJ Department of Education and an appropriate insignia affixed to the student’s high school transcript. This will provide evidence of linguistic skills that are attractive to future employers and college admission offices.

    This program:

    • Encourages students to continue language study;
    • Celebrates the achievement of students who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in two or more languages;
    • Recognizes the value of cultural and language diversity in our community; and
    • Promotes global citizenship and development of skills necessary for the 21st century.

    The Barnegat Township School District is pleased to have this opportunity to celebrate our students and their language achievements.
